According to myth, when the heavens and the earth were separated, the world was in chaos and without inhabitants. Nuwa used yellow clay to mold figures in her own image, breathing life into them to populate the earth. She is also credited with repairing the wall of heaven and restoring order after a great catastrophe. She represents the connection to both heaven and earth.
