What is a med spa?

A med spa sits between a doctor's office and a spa. It works under a licensed medical professional and offers treatments that actually change the skin and tissue — injectables, lasers and medical-grade peels — rather than the relaxation services of a day spa. That medical oversight is the whole point, and it's the first thing worth checking before you book.

How to choose a med spa

What to look for

  • A medical director you can look up by name and license — a physician (MD/DO) responsible for care
  • Your injector is a licensed professional (MD, NP, PA, or RN), not unlicensed staff
  • A real consultation that reviews your health history before any treatment
  • FDA-approved products, named openly and drawn in front of you
  • Consistent, natural before-and-afters and realistic expectations

Be wary of

  • No visible medical oversight — most med-spa treatments are the practice of medicine
  • Vague or evasive answers about who is injecting and their credentials
  • Rushed from greeting to pricing with no health-history questions
  • Pressure to decide same-day, or prices far below the local norm

General guidance to help you compare — not medical advice or a rating of any specific provider.

Med spa questions, answered

What is a med spa, and how is it different from a day spa?
A med spa (medical spa) blends a clinic with a spa: it operates under a licensed medical professional and offers treatments that reach deeper than a day spa — injectables like Botox and fillers, lasers, medical-grade chemical peels and microneedling. A day spa focuses on relaxation — massage, basic facials, waxing — with no medical oversight required.
Who actually performs the treatments?
A physician medical director (an MD or DO) is responsible for the care delivered at a med spa. Day to day, injectables and laser treatments are commonly performed by nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs) or registered nurses (RNs) working under that medical supervision. The exact rules for who can inject and how much oversight is required vary by state.
Are med spa treatments safe?
They are generally safe when performed by trained, licensed staff under genuine medical oversight. Most complications trace back to under-trained or unsupervised providers, or to counterfeit or expired product. Before you're treated, confirm who is performing the procedure and their license, that a physician is involved, and that the product is FDA-approved and drawn in front of you.
How much does Botox cost?
In most U.S. markets Botox runs about $10–$20 per unit. A typical treatment area uses 20–50 units, so a session often lands between $200 and $600. In premium metros like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, expect roughly $15–$35 per unit.
How long does Botox last?
Usually 3–4 months. The effect builds over the first one to two weeks after treatment, then gradually fades — which is why most people schedule touch-ups a few times a year.
How long do dermal fillers last?
Hyaluronic-acid fillers (the most common type) typically last 6–18 months depending on the product and the area. Collagen-stimulating fillers such as Sculptra or Radiesse can last two years or more.
What should I ask before booking a treatment?
Ask who will perform your treatment and what license they hold, whether a physician medical director oversees care, what product and brand will be used and whether it's FDA-approved, and what the realistic results and risks are. A reputable med spa welcomes these questions rather than rushing you toward a same-day decision.
