He completed general surgery training and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, then trained for three years in plastic and reconstructive surgery in the United Kingdom before a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in gene therapy and tissue engineering research at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, followed by an integrated plastic surgery residency at Baylor in the Texas Medical Center.
