Mommy Makeover: making the decision

The thing most people want to hear first: Combining procedures means one anesthesia and one recovery instead of two or three — that's the entire point.

What the price actually covers

A mommy makeover quote is usually three line items. Ballpark on a typical $17,500 total:

Surgeon's fee
$10,500
Anesthesia
$2,625
Facility / OR
$4,375

Quotes below the low end of the range ($14,000) deserve more questions, not fewer — ask what's excluded. Revision policy, garments, and follow-ups vary by practice and belong in writing.

Honest risks

  • The longest recovery on this site — line up 2–3 weeks of help
  • Combined-procedure risks scale with time under anesthesia; ask about your surgeon's limits
  • Staging into two sessions is sometimes the safer call

Are you a good candidate?

  • Done having children
  • Stable weight 6+ months
  • Strong support system for recovery

Only a consult answers this for sure — but if most of these describe you, you're asking the right questions.

Six questions for every consult

  • Are you board-certified, and in what specialty? (Verify it — don't just ask.)
  • How many of this exact procedure did you do in the last 12 months?
  • Can I see before/afters of patients with my anatomy or skin type?
  • Who handles complications, and what's your revision policy and fee?
  • Where is the procedure done, and is the facility accredited?
  • What results would you consider realistic for me — and what won't this fix?

Verify before you book

Check the medical license

Every Whelth profile shows the state license number from public records — look it up on your state medical board site in 30 seconds.

Confirm board certification

The American Board of Plastic Surgery and ABFPRS both have free public lookups. 'Cosmetic surgeon' is not a board.

Cross-check the NPI registry

The federal NPI database shows every provider's registered specialty — it's where our profiles start.

Read reviews for your procedure

A surgeon can be great at tummy tucks and average at noses. Filter reviews to the procedure you're getting.

What a mommy makeover actually costs — by component

“Mommy makeover” is a bundle, not a procedure, so ASPS publishes no single average for it — pricing is the sum of the operations chosen. These are the ASPS average surgeon's fees for the usual components; anesthesia, the facility, implants, garments and labs are all extra.

ComponentASPS average surgeon's fee
Tummy tuck$8,174
Breast lift$6,816
Breast augmentation (implants)$4,875
Breast augmentation (fat grafting)$5,719
Combined figureNone published — varies with the chosen surgeries
Worth knowing. Combining operations changes the risk math, not just the price: in a 25,478-patient study, abdominoplasty alone ran 3.1% major complications and abdominoplasty plus a breast procedure ran 4.3%. A 2023 prospective study found combined surgery not inferior in safety with higher patient satisfaction — both things are true, and which applies to you depends on your own risk factors. That's the conversation to have, with your history on the table.

Timing: finished with childbearing, finished breastfeeding, then wait

ASPS's candidacy language is blunt: you may be a candidate if you are finished with childbearing, in good health, and at your ideal body weight. Its surgeons advise a minimum of six months postpartum — longer if breastfeeding, since breasts take four to six months after weaning to settle into their final shape, and some surgeons require at least three months after weaning before any breast surgery. A later pregnancy can undo the abdominal result entirely. The operation rewards patience more than almost any other in this category.

Recovery with small children is the real planning problem

ASPS surgeons put recovery for a breast reduction or tummy tuck at four to six weeks, and are direct about the household logistics: hiring extra help with the kids is paramount to avoid doing too much too soon, and some recommend waiting until children are school-aged so diaper changes, car seats, and carrying aren't part of week two. There may be drains, there will be a compression garment, and lifting restrictions are incompatible with toddlers. Book the help before you book the surgery.

Mommy Makeover: common questions

How much does a mommy makeover cost?

There is no single published average, because a mommy makeover is a bundle whose price is the sum of its parts. Using ASPS average surgeon's fees: a tummy tuck is $8,174 and a breast lift $6,816 — $14,990 in surgeon's fees for that pairing — while a tummy tuck with implant augmentation ($4,875) comes to $13,049. Those are surgeon's fees alone: anesthesia, the operating facility, implants, garments and labs are all added on top, so all-in quotes run meaningfully higher. Ask for the itemized total across every component, not the headline number.

Is it safe to combine a tummy tuck with breast surgery?

The honest answer is: usually, with real caveats. In a study of 25,478 abdominoplasties, adding a breast procedure raised the major complication rate from 3.1% to 4.3% — higher, but modestly so — and a 2023 prospective study found combined surgery not inferior in safety, with higher patient satisfaction. Risk rises faster if you add more procedures or carry risk factors like obesity. For higher-risk patients, staging the operations is the data-backed cautious choice, and a surgeon who suggests it is reading the same literature, not padding the bill.

How do I manage recovery with small children at home?

Plan for four to six weeks before you're back to full activity, with strict lifting restrictions early on — which is incompatible with car seats, cribs, and carrying toddlers. ASPS surgeons are blunt about this: arrange help with the kids in advance, and some recommend waiting until children are school-aged. You'll likely wear a compression garment, possibly manage drains for the first week or two, and need someone else on child duty for at least the first stretch. The surgery is scheduled; the help should be too.

General information, not medical advice. Cost figures are typical ranges, not quotes — only a consultation produces a real price.
