Chin Liposuction: making the decision

The thing most people want to hear first: A small, quick procedure with an outsized effect on profile photos — most people are publicly presentable in under a week.

What the price actually covers

A chin liposuction quote is usually three line items. Ballpark on a typical $3,900 total:

Surgeon's fee
$2,340
Anesthesia
$585
Facility / OR
$975

Quotes below the low end of the range ($2,500) deserve more questions, not fewer — ask what's excluded. Revision policy, garments, and follow-ups vary by practice and belong in writing.

Honest risks

  • Swelling that hides the result for the first weeks
  • Temporary numbness under the chin
  • Minor contour irregularity is uncommon and usually settles

Are you a good candidate?

  • Good skin elasticity (the skin needs to re-drape)
  • Localized fullness under the chin rather than loose skin
  • Any age, but elasticity matters more than years

Only a consult answers this for sure — but if most of these describe you, you're asking the right questions.

Six questions for every consult

  • Are you board-certified, and in what specialty? (Verify it — don't just ask.)
  • How many of this exact procedure did you do in the last 12 months?
  • Can I see before/afters of patients with my anatomy or skin type?
  • Who handles complications, and what's your revision policy and fee?
  • Where is the procedure done, and is the facility accredited?
  • What results would you consider realistic for me — and what won't this fix?

Verify before you book

Check the medical license

Every Whelth profile shows the state license number from public records — look it up on your state medical board site in 30 seconds.

Confirm board certification

The American Board of Plastic Surgery and ABFPRS both have free public lookups. 'Cosmetic surgeon' is not a board.

Cross-check the NPI registry

The federal NPI database shows every provider's registered specialty — it's where our profiles start.

Read reviews for your procedure

A surgeon can be great at tummy tucks and average at noses. Filter reviews to the procedure you're getting.

Three ways to treat a double chin, compared

Submental fullness has three mainstream treatments — one surgical, two not. They differ in sessions, permanence mechanics, and the specific risks named in their own FDA documents.

Chin liposuctionKybella (deoxycholic acid)Cryolipolysis (fat freezing)
What it isSurgery — fat removed through a small incision with a narrow cannulaPrescription injection that destroys fat-cell membranesCold applicator; killed fat cells cleared by the immune system over 2–3 months
SessionsOneUp to 6 treatments, at least a month apart, up to 50 injections eachOften more than one — ask how many will be needed
FDA statusSurgical procedureApproved 2015 for moderate-to-severe submental fullness in adultsDevices cleared for fat-layer reduction
Named risksSurgical risksTemporary uneven smile (nerve injury), trouble swallowing, bruising in 72% of trial patientsUnder the chin: temporary lip or tongue position change, throat-fullness sensation; paradoxical adipose hyperplasia
Worth knowing. Kybella's own label is the honest read: in trials, marginal mandibular nerve injury presented as an asymmetric smile — all cases resolved, but the median was 44 days and the longest 298 — and the label tells prescribers to think carefully before treating patients with loose skin, where removing fat can leave an aesthetically worse result. The same skin-elasticity question decides liposuction candidacy. Fat removal treats fat; it does not tighten skin.

Chin Liposuction: common questions

How much does chin liposuction cost?

There's no chin-specific published average. The ASPS average surgeon's fee for liposuction generally is $4,711 — chin-only work is a smaller procedure and typically prices below full-body figures — while the nonsurgical alternatives (Kybella injections, fat freezing) average $1,157 per treatment in ASPS data. The catch in comparing them: liposuction is one session, while Kybella runs up to six treatments spaced a month apart, so the per-treatment gap narrows over a full course. Ask for the total course price of whichever route you're quoted.

Is chin liposuction permanent?

The fat cells removed don't come back, and the same is true of the nonsurgical routes by different mechanisms — Kybella's deoxycholic acid destroys fat-cell membranes, and cryolipolysis kills cells that the immune system clears over two to three months. What no fat-removal method does is tighten skin: if submental fullness is partly loose skin or prominent neck bands, removing fat can make that more visible, not less. Skin elasticity is the make-or-break candidacy question for every option here — Kybella's own label says so.

What are the risks of treating a double chin?

Each route has a signature risk named in its own FDA documents. Kybella: temporary marginal mandibular nerve injury, which shows as an uneven smile — every trial case resolved, but the median was 44 days — plus temporary trouble swallowing and near-universal bruising. Fat freezing under the chin: temporary changes to lip or tongue position, a throat-fullness sensation, and the small but real risk of paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, where the treated area grows instead of shrinks and needs surgery to correct. Surgical liposuction carries standard surgical risks. None of these is disqualifying; all of them belong in the consultation conversation.

General information, not medical advice. Cost figures are typical ranges, not quotes — only a consultation produces a real price.
