Upstream Functional Medicine is a physician-led functional medicine practice in Iowa City, Iowa, offering in-person care and telemedicine to Iowa residents plus health coaching nationwide. It is led by Julia Buchkina, MD, MPH, who completed medical school and a family medicine residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, is board certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine and a diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine, and received functional medicine certification through the Institute for Functional Medicine in 2014. Every medical program pairs physician visits with sessions from a functional medicine certified health coach plus between-visit messaging support. The practice addresses conditions including autoimmune disease, gastrointestinal disorders, tickborne infections, mold and mycotoxin exposure, hormone imbalance, and obesity. It runs an on-site laboratory, body composition testing, and a detoxification suite called the Healing Room offering infrared sauna, red light therapy, and ionic foot baths.
