Bay Area Functional Medicine is a functional medicine practice with clinics in Milpitas and the Montclair Village neighborhood of Oakland, California. It is led by Dr. Richard Esquivel, O.M.D., L.Ac., M.S.H.N.F.M., who has treated patients with chronic health conditions since 2002 and opened the original San Jose Functional Medicine clinic in 2009; he added the Oakland clinic in 2021 and renamed the practice to reflect the East Bay expansion. Esquivel holds a Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine from the University of Western States and a doctorate in Oriental medicine from South Baylo University, with extensive training in functional blood chemistry, functional gastrointestinal disorders, and functional endocrinology and immunology. The practice addresses chronic conditions including digestive and gut disorders, autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, thyroid dysfunction, mold and biotoxin illness, and post-viral recovery. Work-up may include blood, saliva, urine, and stool testing, with interventions built on diet, nutrition, and herbal compounds rather than pharmaceuticals. Both in-person and telemedicine appointments are offered.
