About Eduardo C. Alfonso
Dr. Eduardo C. Alfonso is director of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Born in Cuba and raised in Puerto Rico, he received his bachelors degree and medical degree from Yale University, completed his ophthalmology residency at Bascom Palmer, and completed fellowships at Harvard University institutions including the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He joined the Bascom Palmer faculty in 1986 and became a tenured professor and Edward W.D. Norton Distinguished Chair in 1998. Since 2007 he has led the Institute and serves as medical director of its clinical facilities. He is an internationally known expert on cornea and ocular infectious diseases, has performed more than 1,000 corneal transplants, and has authored more than 300 scientific publications.
