Dr. Kathryn A. Sonpal was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and attended Washington University in St. Louis for undergraduate studies in Biomedical Engineering. She received her DDS from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry and completed her Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency training at the University of Pittsburgh, which also involved training in General Surgery, Anesthesia, and Pediatric Anesthesia. During her undergraduate and postgraduate studies, Dr. Sonpal also conducted research in the areas of Radiation Oncology, Molecular Biology, and Dentistry. She has received many awards and distinctions, including the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons award for outstanding achievements and performance in undergraduate Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the National Society of Women Engineers Scholarship, and the National Merit Finalist Scholarship.
