Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is a progressive infection that affects the gums and supporting structures around your teeth. It begins when plaque a soft, sticky film of bacteria accumulates on the teeth and along the gum line. If not removed through proper brushing and flossing, plaque hardens into tartar, leading to gum inflammation and, eventually, tissue and bone loss. Gingivitis is the mildest form. It causes red, swollen gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing. Gingivitis is reversible with improved oral hygiene and routine dental visits. Periodontitis is more advanced. At this stage, the inner layer of the gum and bone pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that can become infected. As the immune system fights the bacteria, the connective tissue and bone are gradually destroyed. Without treatment, teeth can loosen and may eventually need to be removed. Recognizing these signs early allows for timely intervention.
