Dr. James “Jay” Stevens, founder, Medical Director, of Essential Health, spent decades building a thriving primary care and sports medicine practice in Cary, North Carolina. However, he began to notice how the conventional healthcare system limited the amount of time he could spend with his patients. A busy office filled with all-too-brief appointments that ended in lists of prescriptions became his norm. Dr. Stevens knew he wanted more for his patients than the “status quo” of healthcare. He also knew that while conventional medicine is extraordinary, it can fall short in getting to the root cause of a health issue, often isolating symptoms and creating medication dependency. For patients, this means a never-ending cycle of illness without addressing the underlying causes of disease. Functional medicine, rather, digs deeper into an individual’s biology, history, and lifestyle to uncover the root cause of their health issues and restore balance in the body.
