Dental radiographs, or X-rays, are an important part of a thorough dental examination. Among many things, xrays can expose hidden tooth decay, reveal a tooth abscess, cyst or tumor, show impacted or extra teeth, and also reveal bone loss from periodontal gum disease. A digital x-ray allows us to take an image of the tooth or teeth that almost instantaneously transfers to a computer screen. The digital images that are produced can be enlarged and manipulated to provide a more accurate diagnosis. Digital xrays are much quicker than traditional xrays, allowing more time to be spent with the patient, and also provide nearly 80% less radiation than a standard x-ray. Although x-rays are a very important diagnostic tool, they cannot reveal everything that is going on in your mouth. That is why we also use an intraoral camera. Intraoral cameras are a highly advanced diagnostic tool that allows the patient to see for themselves first hand some of the images we see in your mouth.
